Most people choose to see the Great Smoky Mountains by hiking one of the many trails that weave throughout while others decide to hop on a helicopter and soar over them. Yet there is one more little known option that is a fantastic and interesting way to embrace the natural beauty of the mountains by horse, of course! Perfect for couples or a big group of people, beginners and experts alike can enjoy the fantastic sights high atop a beautiful mare or gallant steed.

There are two companies that lead horseback riding expeditions through the Smoky Mountains. The Smoky Mountain Stables is located four miles from traffic light #3 on Highway 321 North, an easy drive from Elk Springs Resort. Each of their horses is well-trained to carry everyone from the first time rider to the champion jumper. Once you have mounted your horse sit back, relax and listen as your tour guide tells you about the history of the land and the different parts of nature you will see.

Another great option is the Sugarlands Riding Stables, also a quick drive from the cabin to Highway 441. Operated by the same company above they have a whole barn full of horses ready to take you, family and friends up into the mountains. They are an authorized concessioner of the National Park Service and are extremely knowledgeable about everything related to the park; if you have a question, they will most likely know the answer! Your tour guides are not only passionate about horses but the trails that they will take you out on as well.

Take a step back in time and imagine how the first settler to Gatlinburg arrived; you guessed it, by horse. See the mountains just as they did on the back of a beautiful horse and imagine the pictures you can take of the aged trees and rushing streams that you pass by. This is an once-in-a-lifetime experience that is a definite must to add to your Gatlinburg itinerary. Since they just opened up again in March for the new season go ahead and make your reservations today before all the horses are spoken for.
