Did you know that each year Gatlinburg becomes host to the best bridge players in the country? The town nearly doubles in size when it hosts the Smoky Mountain Mid-Atlantic Bridge Conference Regional, welcoming over 4,000 bridge enthusiasts. As the largest regional tournament held in the US each year, Gatlinburg looks forward to this event every April.
This year the tournament will be held from April 16 to 22 and Gatlinburg is already gearing up for the fun. If you think bridge is just for grandmothers, think again: the tables will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. everyday, hosting 9.500 tables in constant play. While most of the players travel from all across America, you are likely to run into players from around the world as well. Past tournaments have seen players from Denmark, France, Poland, Japan and Sweden. The players will be given a chance to participate in a wide variety of games including Gold point events, BAMs, KOs, 229ers and Open Pairs.
The tournament is always held at the beautiful Gatlinburg Convention Center. Located just a short drive from your luxury cabin rental, you can easily travel back and forth between games to get a rest, have lunch or hang out with family and friends. This year the event will be chaired by Pete and Julia Misslin, long-time players that have been working hard all year to create a spectacular tournament in 2012. Several of the games will benefit local charities as well as the ACBL Education Foundation. Ever since the tournament began back in 2001, it has grown by leaps and bounds.
In addition to playing hours of bridge, players can treat themselves to a true Gatlinburg vacation. There is nothing like visiting Gatlinburg in the middle of spring when the weather is just right and the flowers are all blooming. If you are traveling with family members who are not participating in the tournament, they can entertain themselves for hours just walking along the Parkway or taking a hike in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Despite being a smaller city, Gatlinburg plays host to an estimated 10 million visitors annually from all around the world.
What can you do in Gatlinburg during your stay? Well, we offer wining, dining and shopping, just likeany large city.
