Most visitors packing their ski’s and coming to Gatlinburg to rent a cabin typically end up at Ober Gatlinburg. Located at the end of Ski Mountain Road, Ober Gatlinburg is the ski area of choice for most visitors. However, most visitors are unaware of a comparable ski area just over the mountains in North Carolina called Cataloochee.
A short distance how the Crow flies, however, it’s about 55 miles from Elk Springs Resort, and with convenient access from highway 321 to Interstate 40, it’s a pretty easy drive. Certainly a good alternative if you have already spent a few days at Ober Gatlinburg. Certainly not as convenient, but a great alternative to Ober Gatlinburg. For those who don’t ski or don’t want to ski, Cataloochee has a dedicated tubing hill with a lift for the tubes and riders.
